After looking at the astronomical death toll of it's drug war, Mexico is considering legalizing pot. I don't use it personally, but i think marijuana should be legalized for a number of reasons. first and foremost, it'd take a lot of steam out of the illegal drug trade. plus it could be taxed like cigarettes to generate government revenue. besides all that, prohibition doesn't work. have we not learned anything from our own history? In Europe by law food producers must label their products if they contain genetically modified ingredients. makes sense. Despite the flurry of stories proclaiming Monsanto's victory in court lifting the ban on GMO alfalfa, the Executive Director of The Center for Food Safety (who's suit resulted in the ban in the first place) says that's not the case. Without getting technical, GMO alfalfa is still off limits until the USDA can make a decision on it's safety. Let's hope Monsanto hasn't gotten it's hooks too deeply in the USDA.

There's a bill [HR 646] in committee now that would create internment camps on military bases across the US. Of course it's being pitched as a humanitarian endeavor to house people during disasters, but there's one little line raising alarms that says the camps can also "meet other appropriate needs, as determined by the Secretary of Homeland Security." Another gem of a bill [S 3081], introduced recently by hometown hero John McCain, would create the classification Enemy Belligerent that can be slapped on US citizens at will, stripping them of any constitutional rights. Once again genetically modified crops prove uncontainable. An experimental strain of GM rice has made it's way into the food supply. The offending company, Bayer, is facing its SECOND lawsuit for not being able to control it's product. When all this new hubbub about terrorist plots started making the scene recently, I figured something fishy was up, but I didn't know what... Until today! Turns out some of the more unconstitutional parts of the Patriot Act are set to expire soon, and what better than the threat of bearded brown folk to scare the country into renewing that horrible piece of law. The funny thing is, of the 763 times the 'sneak-and-peek' provision was used in 2008, only THREE were terrorism related! Thankfully Senators Russ Feingold and Al Franken are sticking up for the constitution. I can only hope more will follow their example.

Under pressure from Monsanto, et al., the USDA is trying to allow genetically modified food to be labeled organic. It goes without saying that this is terrible. A couple of whistleblowers and former employees of the mercenary company formerly known as Blackwater (now Xe), have in sworn statement claimed their founder and head honcho, Erik Prince, had some people involved in an investigation of his company rubbed out! After denying any such thing could possibly happen, Monsanto's genetically modified (GM) beets are turning up in people's backyard gardens. This is devastating to the organic food movement, and frankly to the food supply of all. Why devastating? The American Academy of Environmental Medicine found a direct correlation between GM foods and adverse health effects, and have called for a moratorium on their production. Don't eat Monsanto's poison.

I have no love for the TSA. recently added to their list of reasons to detain and question you is if you're carrying more than a reasonable amount of money. They're just a bunch of bullies and their harassing everyone at the airport certainly doesn't make me feel any safer about flying. I pray for the day they are disbanded.
