A few major sites are going black today in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA). These bills are terrible and WILL ruin the internet as we know it. sites like mine would be history. I used to think that there was no way something this ludicrous would pass but then the NDAA went through, so don't leave it to chance. signing the petition is nice, but calling your representatives is more effective. An editor of the right-wing rag, The American Spectator, boasted in a story about how he played the role of agent provocateur during a protest against the use of unmanned drones, inciting the protestors to riot. The Spectator, of course, redacted the incriminating story, though it's still available elsewhere in it's unadulterated state. Peaceful protest and civil disobedience are some of the greatest tools we have in standing up to the powers that be. it only takes the slightest misstep towards violence to give the establishment an excuse to discredit the movement and/or drop the iron heel on our necks. I plan on attending the "Occupy Phoenix" protest this Saturday. I can only hope that everyone there is smart enough to recognize the work of a provocateur when they see it.

The TSA, in order to dissuade you from doing so, has made opting out terribly degrading by fondling your (or your children's) privates in an enhanced pat-down. My home state of AZ is looking to privatize 9 of its 10 state prisons. If there's anything i fear more than the military industrial complex, it's the prison industrial complex. If you make prisons profitable, their owners are going to lobby lawmakers to create more prisoners. The US already leads the world in prison populations per capita AND in total numbers! When all this new hubbub about terrorist plots started making the scene recently, I figured something fishy was up, but I didn't know what... Until today! Turns out some of the more unconstitutional parts of the Patriot Act are set to expire soon, and what better than the threat of bearded brown folk to scare the country into renewing that horrible piece of law. The funny thing is, of the 763 times the 'sneak-and-peek' provision was used in 2008, only THREE were terrorism related! Thankfully Senators Russ Feingold and Al Franken are sticking up for the constitution. I can only hope more will follow their example.

After denying any such thing could possibly happen, Monsanto's genetically modified (GM) beets are turning up in people's backyard gardens. This is devastating to the organic food movement, and frankly to the food supply of all. Why devastating? The American Academy of Environmental Medicine found a direct correlation between GM foods and adverse health effects, and have called for a moratorium on their production. Don't eat Monsanto's poison.

I have no love for the TSA. recently added to their list of reasons to detain and question you is if you're carrying more than a reasonable amount of money. They're just a bunch of bullies and their harassing everyone at the airport certainly doesn't make me feel any safer about flying. I pray for the day they are disbanded.
