A few major sites are going black today in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA). These bills are terrible and WILL ruin the internet as we know it. sites like mine would be history. I used to think that there was no way something this ludicrous would pass but then the NDAA went through, so don't leave it to chance.

signing the petition is nice, but calling your representatives is more effective. Please take action.

We're getting the year off to a bad start with Obama signing the NDAA into law. I'm sure the ACLU and other organizations will fight it, but i have little hope that our bought-and-paid-for supreme court will overturn it.

Who would benefit most from having American Soil turned into the next "war zone" via the NDAA? when you follow the money, big surprise, it leads to defense contractors! Sharing the seat of shame is Sen. Rob Portman, who took a quarter of a million dollar bribe from Surefire LLC, who in turn got a 23 million dollar contract. pretty good return.

better keep you nose clean, or you'll see some of Surefire's sweet night-raid gear coming in your front door at 4am.

It would appear we have no Bill of Rights anymore. Now that the National Defense Authorization Act is set to pass, that is. I was heartened at first to hear Obama would veto it, but it recently came out that his administration REQUESTED the offending passages of the bill!

if this goes through, and it looks like it will, i don't have a lot of hope for the American dream.

An editor of the right-wing rag, The American Spectator, boasted in a story about how he played the role of agent provocateur during a protest against the use of unmanned drones, inciting the protestors to riot. The Spectator, of course, redacted the incriminating story, though it's still available elsewhere in it's unadulterated state.

Peaceful protest and civil disobedience are some of the greatest tools we have in standing up to the powers that be. it only takes the slightest misstep towards violence to give the establishment an excuse to discredit the movement and/or drop the iron heel on our necks. I plan on attending the "Occupy Phoenix" protest this Saturday. I can only hope that everyone there is smart enough to recognize the work of a provocateur when they see it.

Putting an end to the fallacy of corporate personhood is one of the most important causes facing us today. The good folks of Tucson, AZ are joining a handful of cities across the country and saying corporation are NOT people and have no business in our politics! So if you live in Tucson sign the petition and get the ball rolling.

The NYPD has repeatedly denied the existence of a secret police force within it's ranks called The Demographics Unit which, much like the FBI's infamous COINTELPRO program of the 60's, serves to infiltrate and spy on groups of American Citizens the government deem threatening. An AP investigation has proven the existence of the organization, however, and tied it intimately to the CIA and US Army.

Can anyone say Stasi?

The 10th anniversary of 09.11 is coming up and there will be an unveiling of a new memorial at ground zero. Unfortunately the surviving first responders, once lauded as heroes but now seen by the government as an embarrassing reminder of malfeasance, have been denied a place at the ceremony.

You know it's a bad situation when even Fox News says you're out of line. shameful.

of course legalizing marijuana would take the steam out of all the cartels, but there's too much money to be made the way things are.

A high ranking Russian politician, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, made bold claims that should any nation stand in the way of Russian goals, they could face new secret weapons capable of "putting whole continents to sleep forever" that some theorize are routed in tectonic or weather manipulation technology, since he mentioned tsunamis twice in his tirade.

a bunch of hollow saber rattling? I hope so.

The transgenic genetic modification (putting genes from one plant or animal into another) of food is bad enough, but mixing HUMAN genes into our food supply is really going too far. Already slated for the dinner plate are human infused rice and cow milk. how far will it go? will human genes make for a bigger juicier pork chop? as long as producers aren't required to label their GMO containing products, i think we might just find out someday.

A moratorium on uranium mining in the grand canyon is about to expire, and you can bet the second it does there'll be corporations chomping at the bit to do just that. More important than defacing a national treasure is the fact that the Colorado river runs through the Grand Canyon. That would be the same river that supplies water to much of the southwestern United States and even Mexico. Being that i live in the region, i don't want them putting radioactive junk in my drinking water.

Please sign the petition to renew the moratorium. It's just a bad idea all around.

The same folks that brought us Fox News have been trying to get a law changed in Canada so that they may bring their unique brand of falsehoods and propaganda to the great white north. Unfortunately for them this troublesome law makes it illegal for news stations to lie! as you might imagine the Canadian people are quite fond of the restrictive law, and all attempts to have it change have failed miserably.

What's the take home message here? Fox news LIES and the right wing corporatist agenda would loose all popular support if they were forced to tell the truth. we need to take a lesson from Canada.

Monsanto's dollar overpowers common sense once again! Turns out a couple weeks prior to the approval of GM alfalfa, the USDA was warned of a dangerous new microorganism linked to Monsanto's GM crops that causes diseases in plants and infertility in animals and possibly humans. Scientists believe that this organism could lead to a national, or even global disaster.

But the U$DA approved it anyway.

A monsanto contract forced on farmers who use their seeds puts the blame for any and all damages caused by their product on the purchasing farmer. So if the plants contaminate a neighboring organic farmer's fields, monsanto gets off scott-free. Or if livestock (or people) eat the plants and get sick or die, the planting farmer is liable.

Monsanto poison's the world, gets rich in the process, and leaves the farmers holding the bag. Insidious!

The Obama administration made the disastrous decision to OK the planting of GM alfalfa. Alfalfa pollen blows far and wide and will be next to impossible to contain, basically guaranteeing cross contamination with other (possibly organic) alfalfa crops as well as compatible wild grasses. Aside from the usual warranted complaints about GM crops, some theorize that this could mean the end of the organic dairy and beef industries, as organic cattle are fed alfalfa.

please take action and tell Vilsack (Sec. of the USDA) and Obama to reconsider the approval of GM alfalfa.

It's bad enough that DHS is trying to emulate the Stasi who had a network of informants hundreds of thousands strong across East Germany, but by granting blanket immunity to snitches they're inviting abuse of the already heinous system.

Back during the Bush administration conspiracy theorists shouted that all the Patriot Act, terror alert, Homeland Security nonsense would eventually be turned on the American people. Attorney General Eric Holder just confirmed those fears.

I really thought the Obama administration was going to be the end of all this BS. They got me!

"Hatred can rot away at a person's intelligence and conscience. (The) enemy mentality will poison the spirit of a nation, incite cruel mortal struggles, destroy a society's tolerance and humanity, and hinder a nation's progress toward freedom and democracy", said this year's Nobel Peace Prize winner, Liu Xiaobo. The leaders of our country would do well to pay attention to his words.

Unfortunately Liu couldn't accept the honor because he resides in a Chinese prison for dissent.

The sole inspection for shrimp coming from the gulf is an inspector giving them a sniff. it'd be funny if the punch line wasn't us eating poisonous shrimp. thankfully a regional tv station had some scientifically tested and the results showed twice the FDA's limit of Anthracene, a toxic petro-byproduct.

The mainstream media is reporting that last week's 'opt out day' (regarding the TSA's new radiate-or-grope system) was much ado about nothing and didn't affect travel at all. If you dig, however, there are reports that the new scanners were largely not in operation for the holiday in order to take the steam out of any protests.

also in TSA news, some poor woman, after having subjected herself to the cancer-scanner, was groped mercilessly because her maxi pad looked suspicious in the scan.

The TSA, in order to dissuade you from doing so, has made opting out terribly degrading by fondling your (or your children's) privates in an enhanced pat-down.

Thankfully a San Diego man took a stand and refused both. predictably he wasn't allowed to fly and tried to leave the airport. unpredictably, for doing so he was threatened with a $10,000 fine and a civil suit if he didn't immediately return for a scan or super pat-down. Still, the man did not back down. Kudos!

A trio of bad-Obama stories...
First off, Obama renewed the state of emergency declared by president Bush after the Sept. 11 attack. Was that really necessary? oh wait, we have to justify 2 foreign "police actions" and an ever expanding Homeland Security.

Secondly, he won the right in court to claim State Secrets in order to keep the crimes of the Bush administration swept under the rug.

and thirdly, a british kid has been banned for life from entering the US for calling Obama a prick. frankly i'm inclined to agree with him.

Debt collectors across the US are working the court system in order to have debtors thrown into prison, a practice that has been outlawed since the mid 19th century.

With the economy being what it is, it's easy to imagine any one of us on the business end of collection calls.

A bill that would give subpoena power to a commission investigating the BP oil disaster passed almost unanimously in the House of Representatives, but in the Senate the bill can't even get off the ground.

After looking at the astronomical death toll of it's drug war, Mexico is considering legalizing pot.

I don't use it personally, but i think marijuana should be legalized for a number of reasons. first and foremost, it'd take a lot of steam out of the illegal drug trade. plus it could be taxed like cigarettes to generate government revenue. besides all that, prohibition doesn't work. have we not learned anything from our own history?

California and Arizona have similar propositions on the 2010 ballot. With all this momentum, hopefully something will get through.

The ACLU has taken note of the Obama administration's lack of change since the Bush administration's raping of civil liberties and constitutional rights. According to them, the lack of action is essentially endorsing Bush era policy and establishing a "new norm".

In Europe by law food producers must label their products if they contain genetically modified ingredients. makes sense. Unfortunately in America producers have aggressively lobbied against such labeling out of the realistic fear that if the consumers knew that food contained GM ingredients, they wouldn't buy it.

Congressman Dennis Kucinich has put forward a bill to give us the right to know whether or not our food has been genetically modified. I had to hold my tongue yesterday as an architect i was talking to mentioned how he was involved in a development in South America linked to the World Bank and IMF. Though i'm sure his intentions were probably pure, those of the World Bank and IMF are not.

John Huppenthal, a State Senator in AZ, is running for State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Well, a student journalist by the name of Keith Wagner called him out on his extremely anti-education voting record during an interview. The Senator gives a hilarious performance as he squirms under the scrutiny and then actually runs away from the high school student.

Great job Keith! We need more people like you in the media. Keep it up.

Is it possible that the recent sinking of the S. Korean ship was perpetrated by the US in order to convince the Japanese to keep an unwanted American base in Okinawa, and that the N. Investigative journalist Wayne Madsen makes a compelling case.

Mexican president Calderon had the cojones to come here and lecture us on AZ's controversial new immigration law, when HIS policies are even worse!

Illegal immigration is a problem. I think that we need to take it out on the employers hiring the illegal help, however, and not on the people coming here just looking for a better life. Unfortunately i don't think that will ever happen. There are too many deep pockets with lobbyists, like the corporate mega-farms, that rely on the slave-like labor from south of the border.

it all seems to come back to taking money out of politics.

Speaking of hiding their mess... Somehow BP wrangled the US Coast Guard into harassing the press in order to keep their cameras far away from the oil.

Following the logical progression of the Citizens United case (which granted corporations the ability to own our elections), a corporation, Murray Hill Inc., is running for Congress!

Of course it's a stunt designed to raise awareness of the fact that our democracy is endangered, and that freedom of speech is for people, not multinational corporations.

There's a bill [HR 646] in committee now that would create internment camps on military bases across the US. Of course it's being pitched as a humanitarian endeavor to house people during disasters, but there's one little line raising alarms that says the camps can also "meet other appropriate needs, as determined by the Secretary of Homeland Security."

Another gem of a bill [S 3081], introduced recently by hometown hero John McCain, would create the classification Enemy Belligerent that can be slapped on US citizens at will, stripping them of any constitutional rights. Where do they keep 'Enemy Combatatants'? Guantanamo. Where will they keep 'Enemy Belligerents'? get it?

Sounds like the government is concerned we're going to pull an Iceland or Greece. US Special forces are and have been operating in Pakistan. If that wasn't bad enough, they brought their friends Blackwater (famous for gun running, fraud, murder, etc.) and DynCorp (famous for trading in sex slaves).

Sounds like we're pretty invested in the country. Is it the next big target for the 'war on terror', or a stepping stone to its neighbor Iran?

Once again genetically modified crops prove uncontainable. An experimental strain of GM rice has made it's way into the food supply. The offending company, Bayer, is facing its SECOND lawsuit for not being able to control it's product.

It doesn't take a lot of imagination to think of what would happen if the wrong GM crop were to get out and contaminate the crops of an entire region, or even continent. If all this GM technology is as safe as the media would have us believe, than why have the global elite invested in a backup plan?

Well, now it appears some crimes are "too big to bust". Sibel Edmonds, recently freed from gag order, dropped a bomb of a story telling of government-wide corruption. These ne'er-do-wells deliberately lowered the alarm threshold for a 'pandemic' so that they could sell boatloads of flu vaccine. much of which was poorly contrived and even dangerous.

I wonder if the good Dr. will take a look at any of the other 'pandemics' we've had in the past few years... remember the bird flu? what about SARS?

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), supposedly a grassroots, non-profit consumer advocacy group has been exposed as nothing more than a front for big pharma. NAMI's been taking 'donations' from pharmaceutical companies to the tune of $23 million per year, and in return they've been singing the praises of all the toxins put out by their benefactors.

The powers that be are taking full advantage of the fervor generated by climate change. Exhibit A: The system being implemented to save us from the evils of carbon will be 'cap and trade'. Unfortunately the system was engineered by the same genius behind credit default swaps and will eventually come to a similar conclusion. Exhibit B: A memo now known as the Danish Text was leaked to the London Guardian explaining how the developed countries are going to use the Copenhagen summit to put the screws to the developing world by pulling a bait 'n' switch on the amount of emission cuts they'll have to make, abandon the Kyoto protocol, and worst of all, bring the World Bank in on the scam (just ask John Perkins about the World Bank).

If there's anything i fear more than the military industrial complex, it's the prison industrial complex. If you make prisons profitable, their owners are going to lobby lawmakers to create more prisoners.

The US already leads the world in prison populations per capita AND in total numbers! It's a dangerous path we tread.

Until today! Turns out some of the more unconstitutional parts of the Patriot Act are set to expire soon, and what better than the threat of bearded brown folk to scare the country into renewing that horrible piece of law. The funny thing is, of the 763 times the 'sneak-and-peek' provision was used in 2008, only THREE were terrorism related!

Thankfully Senators Russ Feingold and Al Franken are sticking up for the constitution. After denying any such thing could possibly happen, Monsanto's genetically modified (GM) beets are turning up in people's backyard gardens. This is devastating to the organic food movement, and frankly to the food supply of all.

Why devastating? The American Academy of Environmental Medicine found a direct correlation between GM foods and adverse health effects, and have called for a moratorium on their production.

Don't eat Monsanto's poison.
